The Tui is the largest bird that will visit this feeder. He is sometimes called the Parson bird because of his ruffled parsons collar. In the pictures he will show as black but in real life he displays a beautiful blue iridescent sheen. His call is a few clear bell like tones interspersed with a chattering babble.
There appears to be a large resident bird that claims the feeder as his own. He often sits close by in an aspen tree occasionally calling out and always ready to confront any other visitor. He plays the bully boy chasing away the smaller Bellbirds but ignoring the even smaller Waxeyes. Other Tuis that visit are either treated as competition and chased away or as friends and welcomed to a shared drink. This leads me to believe this is a male differentiating between other males and the potential benefits of befriending a female.
